How to Choose a Forex Broker

Regulation comes first. A broker licensed by the FCA (United Kingdom), ASIC (Australia), CySEC (Cyprus), or DFSA (United Arab Emirates) must hold client funds in segregated accounts and meet minimum capital requirements. Visit our forex regulators directory to check each authority's leverage limits and trader protections. Regulators publish disciplinary records and license numbers that can be verified on their official websites.

Trading costs vary by account type. ECN / Raw accounts show spreads from 0.0 pips on EUR/USD, with a round-turn commission of roughly $3 to $7 per standard lot. Standard accounts bundle the cost into the spread. Compare the two before opening an account — a one-pip difference saves $10 per lot per round turn.

Execution model matters for active traders. DMA (direct market access) passes orders straight to liquidity providers with no dealer intervention. Market-maker desks may re-quote during news events. STP and ECN fall between the two. Match the model to your strategy rather than picking on price alone.

Platforms and deposit methods round out the decision. MT4 and MT5 handle most automated strategies; cTrader and TradingView suit traders who want modern charting. Check that the broker supports your country for deposits and withdrawals — bank wires, cards, and e-wallets each carry different processing times and fees.
